Noise Reduction for Conveyor Systems in a Cement Plant, Serbia
Project Overview
Lafarge, a subsidiary of the Holcim Group and a global leader in the production of construction materials, operates a cement processing plant in Serbia. A key component of the plant’s operation involves a long conveyor system that transports raw materials from a nearby mine to the processing plant. However, the conveyor passes through a residential area, and its noise levels, reaching up to 65 dB, were disturbing the local community. DECIBEL was tasked with providing a solution that would significantly reduce this noise without disrupting plant operations.
Challenge
The primary challenge was to lower the noise level generated by the conveyor system, which reached 65 dB in key residential areas, down to a more acceptable 50 dB. Additionally, the noise emitted from the spillway tower contributed to the overall noise issue. DECIBEL had to implement a noise control solution without halting Lafarge’s operations, ensuring minimal disruption to production while safeguarding the health and safety of the installation team working in an active industrial environment.
Scope of Work
- Acoustic assessment of the conveyor line and spillway tower.
- Design and installation of custom acoustic panels.
- Treatment of approximately 35 metres of the conveyor line.
- Addition of acoustic absorption within the spillway tower to reduce reverberation.
Solution
DECIBEL’s engineers developed a bespoke solution for both the conveyor line and spillway tower. For the conveyor system, we designed and installed acoustic panels made of galvanised steel trays with a mineral wool core and a perforated face. These panels offered a combination of noise absorption and transmission loss, effectively reducing noise breakout from the conveyor. Inside the spillway tower, we found that the outer skin of the structure provided sufficient transmission loss, but reverberation was an issue. To resolve this, we applied perforated galvanised trays with a mineral wool core, which significantly reduced internal noise levels.
The Importance of Noise Control in Industrial Settings
Industrial noise, especially in residential areas, can lead to disruptions in local communities and impact well-being. Noise control solutions not only help companies like Lafarge meet environmental noise regulations but also enhance their relationships with local residents. By addressing these noise challenges, Lafarge demonstrated its commitment to sustainable practices and social responsibility.
