Sound insulation of electric generators in SOLVAY SODI, 2015
Project Overview
SOLVAY, a prominent international chemical company with a long-standing presence in Bulgaria, faced a significant noise issue at their thermal power plant in the village of Deven. Two electric motors emitted disruptive noise levels, creating an uncomfortable working environment for employees and leading to decreased productivity.
Challenge
In October 2017, DECIBEL was commissioned to assess the noise levels in the facility. Our measurements indicated sound levels exceeding 102 dB, significantly impacting staff productivity, health, and overall well-being. Research has shown that high noise levels can reduce productivity by as much as 66%, increase stress, and lead to frequent hospital visits, ultimately resulting in higher costs for employers. The goal was to reduce noise levels to meet the hygienic standard of 85 dB.
Scope of Work
- Conducting initial noise measurements and assessments.
- Developing a comprehensive three-dimensional model of the plant’s acoustics.
- Designing and manufacturing noise-insulating panels tailored to the specific frequency range of the electric motors.
Solution
DECIBEL’s engineering team devised an effective solution involving the construction of cabins around the generators using specially designed noise-insulating panels manufactured at our facility in Botevgrad. These panels were made from Certified Class A materials, selected for their acoustic properties.
The project involved:
- Two weeks for designing and manufacturing the panels, including determining the appropriate thickness and perforation based on the frequency characteristics of the noise generated by the machines.
- A one-week installation period, during which the electric motors were successfully silenced without disrupting their cooling systems or operational processes.
Result
Upon completion of the installation, our engineering team conducted final measurements, recording a noise level of 82.1 dB. This achievement surpassed the project’s target, resulting in sound levels that were 2.9 dB below the established hygiene standard. The successful implementation of this solution not only improved the working conditions at SOLVAY but also contributed positively to employee health and productivity.
Industry Insight
High noise levels in industrial settings can lead to serious health and productivity issues among employees. Implementing effective soundproofing measures not only ensures compliance with regulations but also fosters a healthier and more productive work environment.
